New Zealand Bookshop Day is tomorrow. I have just been to Scorpio Books in Christchurch to spend the voucher they kindly gave me as runner up for my short prose in NZSA Heritage Book and Writer Awards. I bought ‘Unsheltered’ by Barbara Kingsolver, a favourite writer of mine. The way the shelves are arranged I had to stand on a set of steps to reach down the book, a rather hazardous undertaking, but it made me feel very much part of the culture of the shop and was like being in one of those old libraries.
The shop was buzzing with people, looking for books and sitting about reading. It is really good to see it doing well. I love the place, especially with their new shop.
I saw a book on getting published by Fay Weldon. I didn’t buy it but may in future. It looked rather good.
I also bought a birthday present for my son in Sydney. I like giving my sons books as presents, always have. I like to think of them sharing some of the enjoyment I get from reading.
